Complete Business Model Canvas

Please find the updated Business model canvas for distributed economy. This is meant to essentially capture all the stakeholders at the start and also to map them distinctly instead of having them spread across multiple segments.

With due respect to every other Business Model Canvas, in my humble opinion its now complete. This is an explanation to my design of Business Model Canvas, which I say is for distributed economy, but I think can be applicable for any kind of business. I am making this attempt to explain this as I have taken multiple deviation form the traditional BMC's that are available online. The reason why I had to make this attempt will also perhaps come out thru this process of explanation of this BMC.

At first, if you notice, I have captured the participants. Its very important, as I believe this exercise needs to be repeated thru' the journey of the organisation and capturing the participants will give a good perspective as well. Also, at the start, this exercise may involve the founders and well before actually getting started there are instances of some cofounders falling out. Secondly, any revision by the time the company is evolving, this exercise will have to be repeated and then involving the leadership team along with cofounders will be mighty useful.

What stage or phase of the organisation, one is in at the time of doing this BMC exercise would be critical and again, it becomes critical, since I recommend every organisation do this exercise at least once a year as things are changing so fast and there are multiple dynamics at play and also assumptions that needs to be ascertained.

Founder’s governing philosophy is another addition to my BMC template and again, it’s essential because a ‘Tree is as strong as its roots are’ and a founders governing philosophy is essential to the growth of the organisation. While, every venture / founding team may have their own core philosophy, it is essential to capture in line with BMC as this should be the binding factor. Why work with some vendor and why not collaborate with some potential associate are all not just matter of choices but the reasoning behind those choices, that determine the success as desired by the founding team. Every attempt at BMC, one should capture the core essence so it can work as a north star and also ensure that the rest of efforts are inline with that.

Some of the BMC templates do capture competition and some don't. I am considering to explain this here only, if any compare this to the BMC where competition is not taken into account. Competition would be necessary, particularly so as to understand the landscape in which one chooses to operate their business in. Also, It would be important to map the competition from both direct and indirect perspectives. This exercise will be critical for what follows next.

Client services

Collaboration is a clear addition and I wold like the users to see in line of the competition. This is the point at which the BMC is for distributed economy, when the venture is looking at the competition to collaborate with and not just to compete with. Collaboration is the way to innovate effectively. The pyramid economy to circular economy is a matter of personal journey for every entrepreneur. Collaborating instead of competing will fast track that journey. Try it.

"Role" is the last addition (and change) to the BMC for the others and I think its best viewed as whole than in isolation. Now, if you view the BMC as a whole, with the roles of each of the cofounders defined with clarity, even though the starting phase has lots of chaos, the accountability it brings forth will ensure success. Going forward, capturing the roles of the participants of the BMC exercise along with their role in the context and as a whole will be equally appreciated.

I hope, every time you use this BMC template, you will find it useful and most importantly, this will perhaps also encourage you to look at your Business in a far more sustainable way and also in distributed model.
